Today, as most of you know and some of you may not, is Ash Wednesday. Today marks the beginning of Lent which is representative of the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus wandered the desert resisting temptations from Satan himself. Today is the day that people will give something up for 40 days. And try as they might, most fail.
Even though I’m not Catholic I always try to give something up for Lent each year. For multiple consecutive years my sacrifice was to not bite my nails. If anyone has seen me in person you know that I have never succeeded at that, hence the multiple, consecutive tries.
Some use the Lent season to kick-start a diet. And what better time? Take your favorite greasy, nasty, bad for you food and say “I will go without for 40 days.” That’s cool. And it’s a way to revist your New Year’s Resolution that you gave up 3 weeks ago.
Most children will give up candy. That’s actually a smart move since the end of Lent is Easter. And who doesn’t love a good visit from the Easter Bunny? (side note-I can actually tell you why we have the Easter Bunny and why we hide eggs in celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection. But that is kind of deep and besides this post’s ultimate point.)
Those three things I just mentioned? Have been my sacrifice for every Lent for my entire life.
But this year is different. This year I’m giving up something and I’m giving it up for good. This will go far past the end of Lent and will go with me for the rest of my life.
This year? I’m quitting smoking.
Yesterday, February 5, 2008 was the day I had my last cigarette. I think I will always remember that date. I may even inscribe it in the bottom of all of my ash trays, since some of them are too pretty to throw away. And sometimes you need positive and pretty reminders.
You may think that I am doing this rashly. That it’s too hard to quit cold turkey. But I’ve got help.
I’ve got a book that informs me, among other things, that I am ready to quit since I already smoke .3 to .5 milligrams of nicotine with each cigarette, the lowest you can buy in a cigarette that’s not already designed to help you quit smoking.
I don’t think I’ve ever been addicted to the additives. I think I’ve been addicted to the habit. I’m the “I’m bored, I guess I’ll smoke” or “I’m stressed, I need to smoke” smoker. I’ve never been the shaky, “I need a cigarette now or I will kill someone” smoker.
I’ve got a plastic cigarette to help my oral fixation and the need to get away from stress and breathe deeply. It comes with it’s own plastic tube carrying case and it allows me to breathe deeply while not inhaling any harmful substances. In fact, all it is, is a hollow plastic tube colored to make it look like a real cigarette.
I’ve got a hypnosis CD that will either be played all day on a loop or thrown out the window b/c it’s too cheesy and/or annoying.
But most of all I’ve got support.
I’ve got my husband who is also quitting. I’ve got my RLBFF Amelia who promised she’d quit with me. I’ve got my IBFF’s Margarita and Each who might have jumped up and down clapping their hands and exclaimed “YAY!!!” when I told them my plan.
And I’ve got you, my lovely freaders. I need all the support I can get. Check in on me. Encourage me. Not just today, but as frequently as you can. Will you do that for me?
I’d really appreciate it.
Now, tell me, what will you sacrifice for Lent?
*kisses*

I never usually give up anything….. but reading this made me think ‘I’ll give up chocolate’ and then i thought ‘or maybe white pasta….or white bread’ and then decided that the first is a bit too easy and the second and third way too hard…. so now i’m not sure what to do.
That’s great!! I’m proud of you and I’m glad you have the willpower to do it.
FYI- Tara has to go get ashes on her forehead today. And I’m proud to say that my promise for Lent last year is still in effect: No Dr.Pepper.
I haven’t really decided what I want to give up this year. Good Luck
And yes I’m interested to know the connection.
GOOD LUCK!!!
I never give up anything, and I’m not going to start this year… But I’ll be wishing you luck with your resolution(s)!!!
Good luck, honey! You’ve got my 100% support on that. Besides the fact that it’s a nasty habit, each cigarette shortens your life by about 2.5 hours. If you do the math, that’s way too many hours without our Little Spoon. =)
I’m pleased and blessed that you and Dan have made this commitment. I’ll do what I can to support you both.
You AND HOM quitting smoking at the same time? This is my lucky day. Good luck. If I did it, you can too!
So proud of you! Good luck.
I’m not religious, so don’t believe in Lent, BUT I’m going to keep working hard on my eat at home/exercise daily routine.
I am SO proud of you honey! SO proud! I will keep asking how you are doing and support you! Its the best decision you can make for yourself. I’ve seen a lot of bad come from smoking, and although it seems soo far away now, maybe think of your grandkids that will love you and miss you when you are sick, or gone! It will be the ultimate motivation. You will do it, I have faith!
You also have me thinking about what I should give up….. I will think about it and get back to you!!
I am seriously SO PROUD of you. I smoked for over 16 years, so I know how hard it is to quit. Sending you hugs of encouragement!
xoxo
SO PROUD OF YOU. i’ll be here every step of the way if you need encouragement. or pictures of lungs covered in tar sent your way
xoxo
Hooray! I’m really glad to hear this cuz: “[Smoking's] bad mm’kay?” Good luck! Sounds like you have thought of everything that can help!
good for you! and you can definitely do it. my dad used to smoke pipes when we were younger, then on one visit to the doctor they told him that they could tell he smoked and it was about to become a health problem. he stopped that day. never turned back.
i’m sure you and your husband can both do this… especially together!
Woot! Good Luck! We’re all backing you up!
Hmm, what am I giving up? Tough question
We discussed this yesterday. I think I’m with Stephanie – Im just going to focus on eating right and working out.
I’ve seen you post comments on a number of blogs I read and today I chose to visit your blog. And what a day to choose to do so. Quitting smoking is an amazingly difficult but really admirable effort. Super Tuesday was super in more ways than one, eh?!?
Good for you and good luck!!
I haven’t thought about what I’m giving up. Thanks to you, now I am!
YAY for you and Hubbins Mim! As a former smoker I’m going to suggest that your second step to freedom…after not lighting up is to wash EVERYTHING. I’m sure you know how smoke can permeate. It helps to not have to smell it. Febreeze the crap out of your car/couch etc. And if you were a social smoker, like having one with a drink, try curbing that for awhile too. Anywho…YAY and good luck. You’ve already done the hardest part, it’s all easier from here. xo
This is fantastic! I know you will succeed because you’ve given it thought and planned it out.
As a side note, I was smoker and was the same as you – I smoked more because it was a habit not really an addiction. I used the gum to taper myself off the nicotine and found it to be pretty easy.
Good luck and let us know if you need anything!
Yay! Good for you! I would like to quit completely. Right now I only smoke when I drink (I kicked the daily habit last January), but I’d like to not EVER smoke a cigarette again.
I am super proud of you! They just banned smoking in bars in Baltimore and I’m rejoicing over the fact that I can go out and come home smelling just fine.
I will definitely send words of encouragement.
No way! You’re a smoker! I would never have guessed! Well, not any more!
i will be sacrificing a lamb or my first born son, whichever the burning bush tells me is required.
Mim…..I will be here for any encouragement you and Dan will need…..My Dr. told me he thought if i quit, my heart would keep skipping…I never put another one in my mouth, I carried a full pack in my purse, and had almost a fully carton at home….I kept all of that, until I felt strong enough, and gave them to my neighbor..the first 3 weeks are absolutely the hardest, but substitute with something to put into your mouth….hence Gogi chewing gum….As for lent…Our church family is fasting every wednesday during lent, and then good friday service to early service on Easter… It is an awesome experience…Love you guys, Gogi
good luck!!!
I didn’t know that plastic cigarettes existed, but I was totally going to tell you that I have never smoked, but I used to pretend I did (in middle school) because I liked the breathing. Now I see that I’m not the first person to come up with that idea.
Good luck!
I am SO proud of you! I know you’ll do great. I’ve never given anything up for lent, but sweet things are my weakness so I guess it would have to be ice cream. So sad!
Good luck my dear, you can do it!!!!
Im baptized catholic but never practice, though I like the idea of giving something up, just not sure what yet.
OH YAY! I’m so happy for you! I tried to talk my mom into quitting for years and years and she finally did for good nearly three years ago. She’s so much happier than ever!
You can do it!
(ps – I’m giving up fast food for Lent. Past give-ups have included the internet, soda and swearing.)
How exciting! My Dad quit smoking cold turkey when I was in grade school. Both of my parents smoked and after much convincing they quit for me. My mom, had a lot more trouble, but I have no doubt that you and your husband doing this together is going to be a great support system. Good for you! My decision to give up cookies, does not compare.
I give up soft drinks and caffeine every year. My head is already killing me. Is it Easter yet?
Good luck with the no cigg’s! You’ll do great!
Yay hon! I quit smoking December 2, 2006 and while it was hard? I cannot tell you how much better I feel overall. Feel free to always email or anything if you need some encouragement… especially after a cocktail or two!
I’m sacrificing nada! cause I’m a Jew. But yay for quitting smoking!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
Dave smokes randomly.. maybe I’ll try to make him quit for lent… even though he’s agnostic.
Good for you Mim. Good for BOTH of you. I’m proud of you.
Aw what a great thing to give up, my boyfriend is doing it too! Good luck!!
That is so big. There are a million people who wouldn’t even think about giving that up! I am so excited that you are doing this. Best of luck and I know you will succeed!
I actually did give up everything for resolutions and have some how managed to stick to it. So I guess I just want to make sure I don’t go back to my old ways!
GOOOOOOO SPOON! We’ve already spoken about kickin’ the habit. As such, I only have one word for you:
P R I C E L E S S !
I am so so so happy for you, Mim. I think it’s really important that you quit and I will be rooting for you all the way!
Sounds like a tough plan but it can be done!
I’m personally giving up French Fries….one of my passions for life.
