I got my “Holiday Thank You” (we must be PC) present from my boss yesterday. To give you an idea of the kind of gifter my boss is let me just say that I started working for her exactly 1 month before my wedding and my second week on the job I received a full pots and pan set, easily the most expensive thing on my registry. Thank you new boss!
When she said she wanted to know what I wanted for the holidays I played my humble card, b/c truth be told, I love to give gifts more than I like receiving them. Now, don’t get me wrong I loves me some presents, I just enjoy watching the reactions people have to the gifts I give them.
When my boss wouldn’t take “don’t get me a gift” for an answer she went ahead with what she was already planning on getting me.
Yesterday the UPS man stopped by and delivered my present. It took my half an hour to unwrap it. This is why…

That’s my present! Holy crap.
Harley Quinn also got a present, but I don’t think my boss was thinking about my cats when she ordered my gifts.

HQ: “For me? Oh mommy’s boss you shouldn’t have! It’s too much! It’s purrrrrfect. Just purrrrrfect.”
So now I have a question for you. Margarita and I were debating this and we both think the same thing…Should I get my boss a present? I hadn’t been planning on it, b/c let’s face it, money’s tight this Christmas. What do you feel? Do you think that I should do something or do you think that this gift is just a thank you for the gift of sanity I have given her since I started working for her?

Onto other things, b/c I’ve got a lot swimming around in the ol’ noggin today.
I was reminded yesterday of my favorite book from childhood. I carried this book around with me for years. This book? Minou. Never heard of it? Not many people have. I adored this book. And because I had this remembrance yesterday it gave me a light bulb idea! This conversation followed…
Me: When we get another cat I want to get a Siamese cat and I want to name it Minou.
Husband: Whoa! Why would we need to get another cat. Don’t the two we have already annoy you enough?
Me: Well, I didn’t mean let’s go get a new cat tomorrow, I was just saying when those two are…you know…(gulp)…not around anymore we’ll get a new cat.
Husband: Joker and Harley Quinn will always be around. They will never “not be around”.
Me: Why because they’re that annoying?
Husband: Precisely! We’re never going to be able to get rid of them.
And finally, I’m in a damn fine mood today. I shouldn’t be. Mainly because of this. But I am and I think it has something to do with the fact that when I turned my alarm clock off this morning I sat straight up in bed and pumped my fist into the air as if to say “Yeah! I did it! I woke up!”
If only everyday could start with that kind of optimism.
*kisses*

I desperately want another dog (and a cat, while I’m at it), but The Boyfriend won’t let me. We already have 2 dogs and 3 cats
That’s how I woke up today, too, and didn’t even cry (well, almost)! And I’ll remember you as I pump my fists and say, “I TOTALLY just took a shower.”
I can do anything!!
Wow, the is the nicest present from a boss that I have ever seen!! Or maybe I just work in a crappy office? I mean, my $10 gift card to Target IS pretty sweet…but when that is my holiday gift AND my holiday bonus? Ummm can we say shafted?
Anyway, I feel like you don’t necessarily have to get your boss a gift. Maybe a really nice card thanking her and letting her know how much you like working for her, etc. You could always throw in a box of yummy tea or chocolate too, just as a little extra thank you. But I wouldn’t feel obligated to go out and spend tons on a huge gift.
Forgive me if I’m being stupid but I’m trying to figure out if the gift is a bunch of little things or if it all ties together. I think it is a bunch of little things.
Ha ha, I love how you woke up this morning.
As for getting your boss a gift - can you make her some cookies or something? Otherwise, just a nice card would probably be fine. I don’t think you NEED to get her anything.
I love that your boss has been so generous and has shown you how much she appreciates having you for an emplyee - I don’t thik there is anyting wrong with getting your boss something small or making coookies even - but it’s not required per se - I would send a very nice thank you card and that should be sufficient.
Nice gift!! I woke up 15 minutes after my alarm went off. Instead of the usual 45. lol.
I woke up an hour after my alarm went off. I needed the rest though. I had a couple late nights, and my body was like, you think you’re getting up now to go to the gym? Think again. Yeah, I don’t think we have to get out bosses anything although it would be a nice gesture. Food is good though. I may bake for them.
Get your boss a present. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just thoughtful! I mean, I don’t think it’ll be bad to NOT give her a present… but if you can, why not?
I wouldn’t get her a gift. Her holiday has passed, she specifically said not to, and money is tight. I think what WOULD be nice is a thoughtful card letting her know how much you’ve enjoyed working with her thus far.
hmmm since she is Jewish i would say no. a thank you card would suffice i think
mmmm, sushi
sometimes just getting out of bed is celebration enough.
happy to send along my addy so your boss can send me a gift too…although i’m not a sushi fan. maybe i should just send her a wish list. no? worth a shot.
xo, bb
Wow, that gift is REALLY nice. My boss doesn’t celebrate Christmas (oh, and he’s halfway around the world) so I’m definitely not planning on getting him anything. Maybe a card and some homemade goodies? Inexpensive, but still shows appreciation?
The recipe is up at my site! Enjoy!!
No! You should totally be in a great mood. It was a tragic thing that happened yesterday, but like you did this morning at least we’ve been given the chance to see another day.
I’m glad you are happy…pass the happiness my way.
I wouldn’t give your boss a gift, if anything maybe a gift card for no more than $10. You may run the risk of insulting her.
Much Love.
GAH! YOUR BOSS?? amazing! she has amazing gift selection taste.
one attorney here (granted, she is the oddest & rudest person anyone has ever met - this is not up for argument) gave me a dusty, scratched up miniture snowglobe with a lion inside that looked like the lion from the chronicles of narnia during my first holiday season at my office. i was raised correctly, and i’m like you, i definitely love giving more than receiving presents, but the mini-snow-globe whatever? i hung it up for a while and people came out of their ways to walk by and see it. and touch it. and laugh.
i think you should get her a thank you card, and maybe include a gift card to starbucks? or borders? or somewhere else that you think she’d enjoy. i’m sure she’ll appreciate the thought.
The people above (brilliant folks that they are) totally read my mind- a gift card for something like Starbucks would be lovely.
And yay for optimism! Send a little my way!
Your boss is fantastic. Can we share her? Also, both puppy and bunny are taking turns unwrapping the presents underneath our tree. Come Christmas eve, all we’ll have left are the boxes.
I’ve been reading HR and management blogs lately (I need a life, I know), and what most of them say is that a boss would most appreciate a really thoughtful thank you card for all they do for you, rather than a gift. But I do like whoever’s idea it was to maybe bake something for her.
Either way, you definitely have the Best. Boss. Ever.
