If it was a person other people would expect you to mourn but when it's a dog there are some non doggy people who simply don't appreciate what a wrench it is. When my previous dog Jack died my husband wrote me a poem about his life and even now, 8 years on, it still brings a lump to my throat when I read it. A margarita mentioned your sad news so I came to check it out myself. I can imagine how utterly bereft you must feel. It’s always hard losing a dog.
